Underwater Data Centers: A Cool Solution to Hot Problems The recent activation of China's commercial underwater data center off the coast of Shanghai has generated significant interest among experts and observers.

This 24 megawatt facility uses seawater for cooling, is powered by an offshore wind farm, and represents a departure from traditional onshore data centers.

Its design was borrowed from Microsoft's Project Natick, which involved lowering a steel cylinder filled with servers into the North Sea in 2018.
