Maingear’s Zero PCs have become the epitome of a trend where desktop PCs are treated more like designer showcases than functional tools. Their sleek glass enclosures and high-end components on full display make them a status symbol, rather than a working machine.

The design is undeniably impressive, with a 4mm-thick curved glass panel allowing users to admire their components from all sides. A Lego stand for displaying figurines or other small items adds a touch of whimsy, but it’s hard not to see this as an exercise in conspicuous consumption. By showcasing expensive hardware in a glass cage, Maingear is essentially saying: “Look at how wealthy and refined I am.”

Beneath the surface, however, lies more substance than just aesthetics. Maingear has implemented its proprietary MG-RC board, which helps keep power cables hidden from view and adds to the overall sleek appearance of the machine. This attention to detail is admirable, but it comes at a cost – literally.

The prices for the Zero PCs are staggering, with the base model starting at $2,800 and the top-of-the-line “Champion” edition costing $6,500. These figures raise questions about the value proposition of pre-configured PCs in general. With component costs skyrocketing due to supply chain issues and semiconductor shortages, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify buying a high-end PC.

Maingear’s BYO RAM program attempts to mitigate some costs by allowing customers to send in their own memory sticks. This feels like a Band-Aid solution rather than a genuine effort to make PC building more accessible. The company is essentially asking customers to subsidize their own purchases, which goes against the DIY ethos that once defined PC building.

The Zero PCs and other high-end pre-configured machines are hard to see as anything other than status symbols. The glass cage is about showcasing wealth and exclusivity rather than providing a practical solution for users who need a powerful machine. Maingear may be catering to a niche audience, but in doing so, they’re contributing to the trend of making PC building an unaffordable luxury.

As component costs continue to rise and manufacturers like Maingear push the boundaries of premium pricing, we risk creating a situation where only the most affluent enthusiasts can participate in the hobby. It’s time for the industry to reevaluate its priorities – are we building machines for the masses or just catering to the elite?
